Professor Paul Thomas leads the Pulmonary Inflammation Group in translational respiratory medicine, crossing the divide between the university and hospital. He has been the recipient of Fulbright, BMA, NHMRC, ARC, Asthma Foundation, Ramaciotti Foundation grants and others. His skillset ranges from the basic science laboratory (e.g. genomic studies, miRNA analysis), to answering translational questions by a range of techniques from clinical samples, exhaled breath analysis, to epidemiological studies. He initiated a Sarcoidosis Clinic at Prince of Wales’ Hospital to obtain an multidisciplinary clinical approach to this under-studied disease. His pivotal work on the use of exhaled gas analysis was used to support the use of exhaled nitric oxide in approvals given by the FDA, EMA and TGA while the groups’ research profile ranges from basic immunology of sarcoidosis to a search for biomarkers in the breath to diagnose and monitor this disease.
